Easy Apple Crumble Recipe (1)

Big Fan of Apple Crumble Dessert

Everyone loves a warm apple pie, but sometimes you just want something a little less time consuming. Something like this rustic apple crumble.

I recently shared my love of crumbles with this Blueberry Lime Crumble and Apple Cranberry Crumble.

But before we talk about variations, let’s get to the real deal.

Today’s Apple Crumble is ready in under an hour making it the perfect dessert to pop in the oven while enjoying dinner.

When choosing the perfect apple crumble recipe, this recipe is best because:

  1. Apple stays soft, but not watery.
  2. Not too sweet, but not dry either.
  3. Ready in under in hour (less time than eating dinner and doing dishes).

You’ll Need More Than Apples

Easy Apple Crumble Recipe (2)
  • Best apples to use for apple crumble: I like to use a tart apple, like Granny Smith or Golden Delicious. However, you really can’t go wrong with any fresh apple.
  • Oats. I use quick cook oats in today’s recipe, but rolled oats (or old fashioned oats) will also work if you like your oats more chewy (like in my favorite oatmeal scotchie cookies).
  • Sugar. A combination of granulated sugar and brown sugar is used in the apple mixture, and you’ll just need the brown sugar for the crumble topping.

How to Make Apple Crumble from Scratch

Easy Apple Crumble Recipe (3)
  • Apple layer. Peel and dice 4 apples. Combine apples in a large bowl with lemon juice, granulated sugar, brown sugar, cinnamon, and flour. Pour into a 2 qt baking dish.
  • Combine crumble ingredients: brown sugar, cinnamon, oats, flour, butter. I find it easiest to use my hands to make the crumble, but a pastry cutter works too. Sprinkle over the top of apple mixture, pressing lightly.
  • Bake in a 375 degree oven for about 50 minutes, until bubbly and caramelized. Enjoy warm with whipped cream or ice cream!

This easy Apple Crumble recipe is true comfort food with sweet caramelized apple filling and crunchy cinnamon topping. Total crowd pleaser and ready in under an hour!

Prep Time: 10 minutes minutes

Cook Time: 50 minutes minutes

Total Time: 1 hour hour

Servings: 10 servings

Ingredients

For the Filling:

  • 4 apples peeled and diced
  • 1 Tablespoon lemon juice
  • cup granulated sugar
  • cup light brown sugar packed
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • ¼ cup all-purpose flour

For the Crumble:

  • 1 cup light brown sugar packed
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup quick cook oats
  • ½ cup cold unsalted butter cubed
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon

Instructions

  • In a large bowl, combine diced apples with lemon juice, sugars, cinnamon and flour. Pour into a 2qt baking dish.

  • In a separate bowl, combine crumble ingredients. Use hands to combine butter until crumbly (this takes a few minutes). Sprinkle over top of apple mixtures. Press lightly.

  • Bake in a 375 degree oven for 45-50 minutes, until bubbly and caramelized. Enjoy warm with a scoop of ice cream!

Notes

  • APPLES: I like to use a tart apple, like Granny Smith or Golden Delicious. However, you really can’t go wrong with any fresh apple. Just peel and dice and enjoy the fresh comfort food of an apple pie without a crust!
  • ADDITIONS: Add nuts or granola for a crispier crumble topping.
  • MAKE AHEAD: Can be made 24 hours in advance. Refrigerate and cover with foil.
  • DOUBLE IT: use a deep dish lasagna pan and you can easily double the recipe.
  • Save Time: Skip peeling the apples. Grandma may not be happy with this choice, but the apples get so tender nobody else will notice.

FAQs

What is the secret to good crumble? ›

Tips for making the perfect crumble

Mark Bowerman says: "Rub the butter in fairly quickly, and not too perfectly – a fine, dusty texture at this stage spoils the fun. Use a shallowish dish if you've got a wet fruit mixture, otherwise the crumble will start to dissolve before it's baked. Custard. Yum."

What is the difference between apple crumble and apple crisp? ›

Like an apple crisp, an apple crumble is a baked fruit dessert with a layer of topping. But unlike the crisp, the crumble topping rarely includes oats or nuts. Instead, a crumble's topping is more like streusel, made with flour, sugar and butter.

Apple crumble recipe topping is typically made of butter, sugar and flour which gets topped on the cooked fruit filling. To add an extra element of texture and flavour, oats, coconut, nuts and cinnamon can be added to the crumble mix.

What's the difference between apple crumble and apple streusel? ›

A crumble is just a crisp without oats in the streusel. It may feature nuts, but the streusel topping is usually a simple combination of butter, flour, and sugar that is more clumpy than that of a crisp.

How do you keep crumble topping crisp? ›

Why is my apple crumble not crunchy? ›

Why is it called Brown Betty? ›

This has led some historians to believe that Betty was the name of the cook and creator of the recipe and that brown was in reference to her skin color.

How to tell when a crumble is done? ›

Bake the crumble.

Cover the pan with foil, and bake for 20 minutes, then remove the foil and bake for a further 25 to 30 minutes, until the crumble is golden brown and the filling is bubbling. Leave to stand for 5-10 minutes, then serve warm with custard or ice cream.

What is the difference between a betty and a crumble? ›

A brown betty is similar to a crisp or crumble, except the topping is layered into the fruit mixture before baking for an intensely crunchy effect. Food Network Kitchen's Grilled Rhubarb Brown Betty is warm, sweet and super-crisp — excellent when served with a scoop of strawberry ice cream.

Is it better to use cold or room temperature butter for crumble? ›

A well-made crumb should be firm yet tender, and chewy, with big chunks—like granola. The best way to achieve this is to use cold cubed butter. Using room-temperature or melted butter will cause the topping to spread out and flatten when it bakes, rather than standing pert and perky.

Why put baking powder in crumble topping? ›

First, adding a teaspoon of baking powder to the flour mixture makes the crumble topping more tender. Second, using cold butter and working it into the flour mixture makes for a pastry-like topping reminiscent of pie crust. Pro tip: Crumble topping freezes incredibly well and can be kept on hand for crumble anytime.

What happens if you put too much butter in crumble? ›

If you use more butter than the recipe calls for, the crumb topping will be melted and greasy. If you don't use enough butter it will be dry and floury.

What does cornstarch do in a crumble? ›

It is often mixed with a small amount of cold liquid to create a slurry to thicken sauces. When added to cake, cookie, pie filling and shortbread recipes, cornstarch helps create a crumbly and tender dessert-like texture. Commercially, cornstarch is often used as an anti-caking agent.
