It's important to use hurricane ties when framing your shed roof. In fact, almost all building codes across the United States require their use when framing a shed roof. These ties were developed to help strengthen the framing for roofs to help prevent damage from strong wind and seismic forces.

To resolve the issue, you can bolster the shed roof up with additional framing. This should strengthen the roof stop if from sagging. Alternatively, you could take off the roof and purchase tongue and groove boards, nail these into place and re-felt the shed roof.

The straps are designed to wrap around the framing members and provide a secure connection that can withstand high winds. Once the hurricane straps are in place, the roof sheathing can be installed over them. This helps to reinforce the roof and provides an additional layer of protection against wind damage.

Hurricane ties are also called hurricane clips and hurricane straps. They are metal connectors with holes for fasteners, such as nails or screws. Roofers use hurricane ties to reinforce the connection between the roof truss and the wall plate.

Reinforce additional support

Extra support can strengthen the shed and prevent it from shifting or settling over time. Installing braces, which are diagonal pieces of wood, can uphold the walls and roof.

While the majority of the hurricane ties that Simpson Strong-Tie offers are one-sided (such as the H2. 5A), some are designed so the truss or rafter fits inside a “U” shape design to allow for fastening from both sides (such as the H1).

In most areas, anchors are required by law. The exact number of anchors is usually decided by your local building inspector and will vary from coastal regions to inland regions. Please consult a local building inspector for the number of anchors to use for your shed.

While there are numerous materials and prefabricated products available for building sheds, the experts highly recommend starting with a concrete slab or concrete piers. Slabs must be reinforced with rebar to meet high-velocity wind zone codes. However, homeowners in flood zones should opt for piers.

MiTek's hurricane ties are designed and typically used to resist uplift and lateral forces applied to roof framing members from wind and seismic events. As a secondary benefit, many MiTek hurricane ties provide supplemental bearing capacity of roofing members resting on the top of a supporting wall.

To install a hurricane tie, you need to hold the metal piece in place and hammer the first nail to secure it to the truss or rafter. Once the first nail is in place, installers can secure the unit by hammering the remaining nails; five on the top and five on the bottom.

Rafter ties help resist the outward thrust that rafters exert on the exterior walls. They help keep walls from spreading due to the weight of the roof. When the walls spread, the ridge board might sag. A sagging ridge is one indication that the roof structure may lack adequate rafter ties.

Build a raised foundation

Construct your shed on a solid foundation that's a minimum of two inches off the ground. If any part of the floor is in ground contact, it will rot, provide easy access to rodents, and probably won't stay straight because the earth has a habit of shifting and eroding after heavy rains.

Install structural screws or metal straps to connect the roof and wall top plate framing to increase the strength of the roof trusses or rafters against uplift. Install skylights and windows with impact-resistant glass in regions that experience high winds and hurricanes.

The best way to do this is to add additional support to your shed roof from the inside. Fit new rafters and don't just focus on the affected area, fit them across the full shed roof to prevent sagging in other areas.
