Jadeveon Clowney's massive hit against Michigan (GIF) (2024)
Officials at the Outback Bowl badly misread a measurement on a potential Michigan fourth-down conversion, allowing the Wolverines to continue a drive in the fourth quarter.
A play later, South Carolina defensive end Jadeveon Clowney took matters into his own hands.
Clowney, one of the nation's premier defenders – and premier players, regardless of position – has been lined up head-to-head with Michigan left tackle Taylor Lewan, one of the nation's best at his position. The two have played to a draw, more or less… just not on this one play, and not at several points in the fourth quarter.
Given a new set of downs after the erroneous first down, Michigan's first play during the new set of downs went to running back Vincent Smith, who was quickly (and ferociously) met by Clowney behind the line of scrimmage.
Smith's helmet went one way, the ball another, and Clowney placed one big mitt on the fumble to give South Carolina possession.
Here's the video of the hit.
It was only fair that the Gameco*cks got the ball back after Michigan's "conversion." How bad was the call on the field? The CBS Sports SEC Twitter account has a picture:
Yeah, that's a bad call. Also, Clowney is a monster.
Clowney signed a one-year, $2.5 million contract with the Ravens for the 2023 season following an injury-riddled 2022 campaign with the Cleveland Browns.
second in school history with 47.0 tackles for loss and third with 24.0 career sacks… holds the school record with nine forced fumbles… attended the NFL Combine in February.
It was the 27th edition of the Outback Bowl, named after sponsor Outback Steakhouse, and was telecast at 1:00 p.m. ET on ESPN. It featured the South Carolina Gameco*cks from the Southeastern Conference (SEC) versus the Michigan Wolverines from the Big Ten Conference. South Carolina won with a final score of 33–28.
On Jan.1, 2013, with just over eight minutes remaining in the fourth quarter of the Outback Bowl, then-South Carolina Gameco*ck Jadeveon Clowney burst up the middle, a blazing runaway train, met Michigan running back Vincent Smith just as Vincent hugged the handoff to his chest -- or was it even before?!

Clowney has always taken his time, signing with the Browns in April 2021 and then again in May 2022, but bookending those contracts by waiting until September 2020 to make a deal with the Titans and August 2023 to join the Ravens. He's with Carolina now in March with a full offseason program ahead of him.
However, he has already vastly exceeded expectations for him coming into the league and he has a Super Bowl ring. Three-time Pro Bowl outside linebacker Jadeveon Clowney was drafted first overall by the Houston Texans in 2014. He already had become a star before he even played his first snap in the NFL, though.
The New York Jets and Baltimore Ravens were seen as the favorites to land Clowney, a three-time Pro Bowl pick. Clowney, 31, racked up 9.5 sacks in 17 games (15 starts) last season for the Ravens. That matched his career high for sacks, accomplished in 2017.
Jadeveon Clowney has 8.5 sacks for the Baltimore Ravens this season. This season, Clowney has tallied 39 tackles, 18 quarterback hits, 8.5 sacks, eight tackles for loss and five passes defended. He has also recorded a career-high in pressures with 69, five more than his previous best.
The ReliaQuest Bowl was called the Hall of Fame Bowl from 1986 to Jan. of 1995 before being renamed the Outback Bowl in April of 1995. The bowl was named the Outback Bowl until June of 2022 when bowl officials agreed to a four-year naming rights deal with ReliaQuest, a cybersecurity company based in Tampa.
The Orange Bowl featured ACC champions Florida State versus at-large selection and MAC champions Northern Illinois. The game was part of the 2012–2013 Bowl Championship Series and was the second of the series to be played, following the 2013 Rose Bowl. Florida State won the game by a score of 31–10.
After his comments made in the interview were published in an article, they prompted him to be dismissed from practice. The interview with Cleveland.com dove into his future with the team, and Clowney said that he was "95% sure" he wouldn't re-sign with the team after the offseason.

Jadeveon Clowney, who the Texans took with the 2014 NFL Draft's No. 1 overall pick, will face off with his former squad for the fifth time Saturday, but for the first time in the playoffs. For the 30-year-old, though, what's at stake in the Divisional Round supersedes any type of revenge factor.
