Rare Structures - Minecraft Guide - IGN (2024)

Rare structures can be found both in the Nether and the Overworld. They are the most difficult to find but have the highest quality loot, if any. Look at the lists below each name to see the loot. Be careful and bring weapons because they will allways have mobs nearby!

Stronghold

Strongholds can be found in any biome holding the gateway to the final dimension of Minecraft: The End. They are stone brick structures with a large amount of rooms. A maximum of 128 of these can be generated per world, making them extremely rare. They spawn in a circular pattern around the world, making them impossible to find at extremely far distances.

Strongholds are where you will find unactivated end portal frames. Use multiple Eye of Ender to complete the portal and enter The End. These will be located in the same spot in each stronghold, but only once. Loot chests can be found scattered within the stronghold and in unique rooms such as storerooms, libraries, and altars.

Geode

These are found underground in all Overworld biomes. They are hollow, circular deposits of calcite, amethyst blocks and smooth basalt. This is the only place amethyst and amethyst crystals can be found. To best find them, dig near the ends of caves.
Remember, geodes do not have loot but can be mined for calcite, amethyst and smooth basalt!

Fossil

These are only found in Deserts or Swamps. While usually buried, they contain bone blocks and coal ore. They do not contain much but can offer a quick refuel on either of these items if in the Nether.

End City

These are only found in The End, End Midland and End Highland biomes. They are city-like towers built from purple stained glass, purpur and end stone bricks. They are where shulkers are found and loot chests.

Elytra may be generated by an End Ship in the city. This is one of the most valuable items in Minecraft and worth seeking out by all means necessary.

Possible Loot:

Igloo

Igloo’s are found in Snowy biomes. These do not contain anything particularly important but it may have hidden the basem*nt under carpet. The basem*nt may also house a villager and zombie villager behind iron bars.

Pillager Outpost

These can be found in any snowy Taiga, Plains, Desert and Savana biomes. These are structures that spawn pillagers and act as a watchtower. They are usually built with different types of wood and stone. Inside, their will be a chest. The outposts are surrounded by multiple small structures that can contain iron golems. Set them free to help take the Outpost!

Stay away from villages for a while as visiting these towers will likely give you the “Bad Omen” effect.

Possible Loot:
