Participated in discussions at COP28 with the spotlight centered on food, agriculture, and water. Notably, allocating just one day to a sector responsible for significant global emissions seemed insufficient. The emissions juggernaut of Global Food Value chains (GFVC) looms large, contributing a staggering one-third of global emissions. In 2020 alone, by some estimates GFVC emitted an enormous ~21 GtCO2e ( ~35% share), primarily from agriculture and land-use activities. Projections indicate a troubling 40% surge in emissions by 2050 due to a 15% increase in global food production. Even with an immediate halt to fossil fuel emissions, the current trajectory of GFVC poses a severe threat to achieving the 1.5 °C target, endangering the 2 °C target by the century's end.While there was a consensus on the need for a comprehensive approach involving sustainable practices, emission reduction, and addressing inequalities, opinions varied on the roadmap's reliance on incremental improvements to the industrial food system(s). What's imperative is a clear, definitive action plan emphasising less meat-centric diets, transitioning agriculture to low-intensity production systems, infusing technology, and providing targeted climate finance.
