What does SEPTA stand for? ›

SEPTA (Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority) is one of the largest transit systems in the country. We support five counties in the Greater Philadelphia area. We also connect to transit systems in Delaware and New Jersey. Our services include regional rail, buses, trolleys, subways, and a high-speed line.

SEPTA is the major transit provider for Philadelphia and the four surrounding counties, Delaware, Montgomery, Bucks, and Chester. It is a state-created authority, with the majority of its board appointed by the five Pennsylvania counties it serves.

U.S. legal tender is welcome on buses, trolleys, transit trains and the Norristown High Speed Line — but you need to have exact change. Fare is $2.50. That's also the cost with a Quick Trip paper ticket, dispensed in stations. If you pay with a SEPTA Key Card Travel Wallet, though, the fare is $2.

Popular destinations include Allentown and New York City. Serving points all around New Jersey from Jefferson Station, William H. Gray III 30th Street Station, and Trenton Transit Center. Popular destinations include Cherry Hill, Atlantic City, Princeton, New Brunswick, and Newark.

SEPTA Metro is solely the name for the network that will include our subway, elevated, and trolley lines. It doesn't replace “SEPTA” any more than using the term “Regional Rail” does.

SOURCES OF CAPITAL FUNDING

SEPTA's FY 2021 Capital Budget includes $11.65 million in anticipated local matching funds. The required local match for state and federal grant funds is provided by Bucks, Chester, Delaware and Montgomery Counties and the City of Philadelphia.

Both cash and bankcards are accepted for purchase and no pre-planning or reservation is needed. Simply board and pay for your fare while traveling. The conductor will issue a Quick Trip, needed to exit Center City Philadelphia Stations (valid 2 hours from time of purchase).

The SEPTA Regional Rail system is a commuter rail network serving the Philadelphia Metropolitan area. The system has 13 branches and more than 150 active stations in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, its suburbs and satellite towns and cities.

The Department of Justice announced today that it has reached a settlement with the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA), a regional public transportation authority based in Philadelphia.

SEPTA is a state agency governed by a 15-member board of directors. The City of Philadelphia appoints two members: one member is appointed by the Mayor, the other by the City Council President.

What was before SEPTA? ›

So far I've been most excited about the story of Philadelphia Rapid Transit Company, the predescessor to Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA), and its president from 1911 to 1929, Thomas Mitten.

For customers who do not have a Key Card, customers can purchase a Quick Trip on board from the Conductors using debit, credit, or cash. For Regional Rail travel, customers must tap on and tap off so that the correct fare is deducted. Missing a tap on or tap off may result in the max fare being charged.
