Esau "despised" his birthright. He didn't hold it with the value it was worth, and did not take care to protect it. This choice will carry consequences for the rest of his life, and even into history (Hebrews 12:16). Genesis 25:29–34 describes a significant encounter between the twins Jacob and Esau.

From this, God reveals that parents must set boundaries to protect their children from predators and their own poor choices. Second, Jacob showed no anger at Dinah's rape. Dinah was the daughter of Leah, the unloved wife. Jacob made the mistake of treating the children in his blended family differently.

Jacob offered to give Esau a bowl of stew in exchange for his birthright (the right to be recognized as firstborn) and Esau agreed. The birthright (bekorah) has to do with both position and inheritance.

Jacob has revealed his scheming nature. Now Esau reveals his recklessness. He has both discounted the value of his birthright and inflated the value of immediately satisfying his appetite. As the firstborn of Isaac and Rebekah, the heir of the Lord's promises (26:1–5), Esau should have clung to his status tenaciously. The birthright of the eldest male child in the ancient Near East conferred upon him the headship of the clan and a double share of the inheritance (Deut. 21:15–17).

Simple: Do the right thing and love one another.

He did not love his brother in the way we are supposed to love. If he did, he would not have tricked him TWICE! Esau should have been strong and not given in to Jacob's manipulation. He should stand on his moral ground and resist temptations.

The God of the Bible is omniscient, all knowing; omnipotent, all powerful; omnipresent, ever present; as well as immutable or unchanging; and this is the God we teach and preach. Listen, our God not only knows the future, He is already there!

God blesses the humans—a key theme in this book—and gives them a garden from which they can begin their task of building the world. It is important to note that these humans have a choice as to how they are going to build this world, represented neatly in the tree of knowledge of good and evil.

In the scriptures, birthright usually refers to the right of the son born first in a family to inherit his father's possessions and authority. In ancient Israel, for example, all the sons received some of their father's property, but the firstborn received a double portion and became the leader of the family.

Jacob had the birthright, and Esau had one meal: Jacob gave Esau bread and lentil stew; and he ate and drank, and rose and went on his way (vs 34). Thus Esau despised his birthright. Here despised means he did not give any particular value to his birthright. He gave it little consideration.

He sold God's blessing too cheaply. So, in this passage, he sells God's blessing, even as he later sells his father's blessing. Believers should learn from Esau to rejoice in God's blessings and avoid “selling our spiritual birthrights” for the little that the world has to offer in return.

Genesis 25 records the deaths of both Abraham and Ishmael, as well as the births of Jacob and Esau, and the purchase of the most expensive bowl of stew in history. First, though, we learn about Abraham's "other wife" Keturah. Scholars are divided about whether Abraham married Keturah before or after Sarah's death.
